IUB professor one of six Macy Faculty Scholars

Aug. 7, 2014

IU Bloomington associate professor Deanna Reising hopes to train health profession student teams to assist discharged hospital patients who are considered a high risk for readmission, an innovative project she's able to pursue as a result of funding through the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation.

Reising is one of only six Macy Faculty Scholars named recently nationwide by the foundation, an honor that comes with $100,000 in support each year over the life of the two-year award.

The first of its kind, the Macy Faculty Scholars program aims to accelerate needed reforms in health education to accommodate changes occurring in health professional practice and health care delivery.

Reising's project will use nursing and medical student teams to serve as “navigators” for patients, working with those being discharged from the hospital but remain at high risk for readmission. While the teams will initially work with patients discharged from IU Health hospitals in Bloomington and Indianapolis, Reising's goal is develop a model scalable to any size hospital in the system. Her project allows students to engage in real practice with faculty and health care professionals, who will mentor and support them.

“The award recognized my potential to further develop myself so I can have a national impact on health professions education," she said.

Reising, who has taught for 25 years, earned her bachelor's in nursing from IU, master's degree as an Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist from Purdue University Calumet and her Ph.D. in nursing science from IU.

Her award supports one of Provost Lauren Robel’s key initiatives to improve STIM education -- science, technology, informatics and math -- on campus by raising awareness of increased opportunities for women within those fields. Reising’s initial work on interprofessional teams has been supported by internal funding through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at IU Bloomington.
